Hi everyone and welcome to my 40 years celebration of breeding.
23 October brought us days of chaos – no power, no sleep, and a lot of chainsaw noise – but I was incredibly lucky to have friends and family lend a hand. Their help with the clean-up was much needed and very much appreciated. It reminded me again how strong our farming community is when things turn upside down.

There’s plenty of work still going on around the district – fences to rebuild, shelter to replant, and neighbours still helping neighbours. It’s what makes this region special. Thanks again to everyone who checked in or lent a hand.

Markets: A Brighter Patch for Lamb and Mutton
After a tough couple of seasons, it’s good to see some positive movement. Procurement pressure and tightening supply have lifted returns, with lambs sitting around $10.60 – $11.00/kg/cwt and mutton around $5.50-$6.00/kg/cwt, depending on plant and grade.

Ram Pricing
With rising costs and ongoing investment in data recording and DNA selection, it has become necessary after 10 years of not doing so, to increase my prices in line with average market pricing.

My aim hasn’t changed – to keep providing sound, high-performing genetics that give you results where it counts. I’m happy to discuss the details personally if you have any questions.

At Colhoun Genetics, we often talk about performance, fertility, and long-term results. But every now and then, we’re reminded that good genetics are not just measured in numbers – they’re seen in the lasting impact a ram can have on a flock, and on the people who work alongside them.

Recently, we received a message from a long-standing client in Mount Hutt, Canterbury. Alongside a few photos and a video, he shared the news that he was farewelling one of his rams – a ram that had been part of his operation for ten years.

Ten seasons on-farm is no small feat. Over that time, this ram had proven himself year after year, contributing to the strength, consistency, and performance of the flock. From lambing through to finishing, his influence was felt across generations – something only truly reliable genetics can deliver. But what stood out most in the message wasn’t just the performance. It was the respect.

The kind of respect that comes from an animal that has done its job, quietly and consistently, without fuss. The kind of respect that builds over time, season after season, until that ram becomes more than just part of the system – he becomes part of the story of the farm.

For our client, this wasn’t just the end of a working life. It was the farewell of a ram that had delivered exactly what was asked of him, year after year.

At Colhoun Genetics, this is what we aim for. Rams that are not only bred for performance on paper, but that go on to prove themselves where it matters most – in real New Zealand farming conditions, over the long term. To our client in Mount Hutt, thank you for sharing your story with us. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do, and the value of getting the genetics right from the start.
